Narrative Description The Edward A. Brackenridge House, located in Oscoda, is a two-story, L-shaped, gable-roofed brick building, featuring segmental-arch, brick hoods; one-over-one-light, double-hung, sash windows; plain cornices without returns; and brick beltcoursing. An early porch was removed from the front facade, and the present "Mt. Vernon" entrance portico constructed in recent years. The interior retains much of its historic finish.
Statement of Significance Edward A. Brackenridge, a native of Ware, Massachusetts, migrated to Michigan in 1850, and began his career as a lumberman and surveyor in Iosco County. He platted village of Fremont, which became Alpena, in 1856. When the first election took place in Oscoda Township, Brackenridge served as an election inspector. He also served three terms as an Iosco County surveyor. In 1877 he was listed as a director and the secretary and treasurer of the Oscoda Boom Company, a business venture concerned with the running, booming and rafting of logs. The same year Brackenridge had the present brick residence constructed for himself and family. In 1890 he left Oscoda and moved to Berkeley, California, and acquired large timber holding in California and Oregon. The Edward A. Brackenridge House in Oscoda has historical significance as the residence of a prominent early Oscoda and Iosco County resident and businessman. It has architectural note as Oscoda's oldest brick residence.
