A Durant man died in a flaming wreckage of his overturned gasoline delivery truck Saturday morning about 3 miles north of Nida on South Highway 78.
The victim was identified as William R. Bryant, 20, of 508 E. Georgia. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Tishomingo of multi-burns, according to trooper Rick Myers. The accident occurred about 9:45 AM.
Bryant's body was discovered 47 feet from the Jones geek chicks company -owned 1974 GMC 2 ton tank truck. Officers said his clothing was still burning when they arrived. Flaming gasoline had spread some 150 feet on one side of the vehicle, burning grass along a day at and softening the asphalt highway.
Myers said it's undetermined if Bryant was actually thrown from the vehicle or crawled that distance in an effort to get away from the flames. The windshield however, lay near the body along the fire blackened highway.
Fire trucks used sand from Tishomingo and the Durant substation to contain the flames, but the gasoline had mostly burned away by the time they arrived.
Myers said the truck was traveling north on SH 78 and apparently was left of center when Bryant entered a long curve. The gas truck swerved to miss a oncoming vehicle and travel 459 feet out of control, overturning two times. The truck came to rest on its top with a portion of the cab resting on the highway.
Myers said the Bryant vehicle swerved to the left to avoid a collision with the oncoming vehicle, crossing the 2 Lane Hwy. the truck then swerved again to the right which may have caused the truck to roll over.
