- Mary Ann Dent was born 2 Apr 1824 in South Carolina and raised in Tennessee. At age eleven, she and her siblings moved to Holly Springs, Marshall County, Mississippi where she met Elbert Early who was born in 4 Dec 1811 in Christian County, Kentucky. Records indicate that he was a horse trader, slave trader, and land speculator.
A wealthy heiress, Mary Ann was barely 13, and Elbert was 26 when they married there on 23 May 1837.
Two years later, the couple moved to the Republic of Texas. They purchased a land grant on Nov. 21, 1839 in Red River County. Their land was situated in what would become Lamar County. And later, the Fannin County line cut through the middle of the Early property which was also close to Hunt County on the south. There, Mary Ann and Elbert Early had eleven known children who were all born in Texas. The Earlys were founding members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Churches in Ladonia and Dial.
Elbert and Mary Ann Early were among the first settlers at Fort Lyday. In 1841, Early was a lieutenant in the Texas Rangers. He fought in the 1841 skirmish on Village Creek. In 1844, Early was the second Sheriff of Lamar County. In 1861 as a Fannin County delegate to the Texas Secession convention in Austin, he voted to secede. At least two sons and a son in-law served in the Confederacy.
Mary Ann Dent Early died in Ladonia, Fannin County, Texas on 24 May 1897 at the age of 73. On 20 April 1904 at the age of 92, Elbert Early died in Durant, Bryan County, Oklahoma Indian Territory where he was living with a son. They are both buried in the Ladonia Cemetery.
I am a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas because the Earlys moved to Texas during the years of the Republic which were 1836 to 1846.
